Summary

​This presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the North-Central, and Southern U.S. understand and manage soybean seed quality. A good soybean crop begins with good seed, but there are many factors that can affect the quality of soybean seed. In this presentation, we will describe the differences between seed germination and seed vigor and how seed vigor is measured. We will then cover the major abiotic and biotic factors that affect soybean seed quality, general methods to preserve seed quality and tips for growers buying seed.

About the Presenter

John RupeJohn Rupe is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Arkansas. He has been at the University since earning his doctorate at the University of Kentucky in 1984 where he worked on Phomopsis seed decay of soybean. His research includes focuses on Phomopsis seed decay and soybean seed quality, seedling diseases and charcoal rot. He has also conducted extensive research on sudden death syndrome, stem canker, Phytophthora root rot, frogeye leaf spot, soybean cyst nematode and soybean rust.​
