Summary

​This presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the Southeast with irrigation management on Cotton. Specifically this presentation addresses the reason cotton requires irrigation, talks about scheduling irrigation and irrigation scheduling methods and even goes into detail about two very new scheduling methods. The information in this presentation will give the viewers a better understanding of irrigation management for cotton production and its benefits.

About the Presenter

Wesley M. PorterWesley M. Porter has a BS in Agricultural Mechanization and Business (2007) from Clemson University, an MS in Agricultural Engineering (2010) from Clemson University, and a PhD in Agricultural Engineering (2013) from Oklahoma State University. His master’s degree research focused on precision agriculture—specifically, sensor-based nitrogen management for cotton production in coastal plains regions. After completing his master’s degree, he accepted an Extension Associate Engineering position at Oklahoma State University, where he worked specifically on machinery and precision agriculture projects and concurrently pursued a doctoral degree. The topic of his doctoral research was fiber quality and foreign matter in stripper harvested cotton in the Texas High Plains. He worked very closely with the USDA-ARS Cotton Production and Process Research Unit in Lubbock for this research project. Since 2014, Porter has been an Assistant Professor and Extension Irrigation Specialist for the University of Georgia and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Auburn University). He has an 80% Extension and 20% research appointment.​
