​​Soybean Viruses: Biology and Symptoms (Part 1)

Summary

There are two parts to this presentation on soybean viruses. Part 1 covers the most common soybean viruses, with an emphasis on identification of each disease. An overview and introduction to viral diseases is presented, along with information on how each virus is transmitted. Part 2 focuses on management options for soybean viral diseases. Management options are discussed in general terms that suggest ways to avoid or reduce vector populations. Genetic resistance to viral disease is discussed, and the sources of viruses are discussed in terms of how to reduce potential introductions.​

About the Presenter

Loren J. GieslerLoren J. Giesler is an associate professor and extension plant pathologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Plant Pathology. His soybean pathology work currently focuses on disease surveys of soybean viruses and Phytophthora sojae races in Nebraska. His work also covers the development of Bean Pod Mottle Virus tolerance through management studies and germplasm evaluations. In addition, Giesler is a national leader in the identification of soybean rust. He has conducted soybean rust fungicide application studies with the USDA and is a coordinator for national soybean rust sentinel monitoring efforts. Giesler earned his MS and PhD degrees in plant pathology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994 and 1998, respectively. He earned his BA degree in biology with minors in math and chemistry from Chadron State College in 1992.​
