Summary

The soybean checkoff is a producer-funded federal initiative under the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 2007, the national checkoff totaled more than $105 million. This presentation shows how soybean producers, through their soybean checkoff, are helping shape the future of the soybean industry. Soybean producers are helping revolutionize the industry by helping plant breeders develop soybeans that produce a more heart healthy oil for human consumption. These soybeans may one day be our World’s commodity soybean improving human health world-wide. Scientists and plant breeders are diligently working to improve soybean agronomics. Soybean producers have also funded considerable work in genomics that has resulted in a robust physical map. In just the last decade soybean producers have helped discover Rps8, a new gene to protect soybean plants from Phytophthora, several new genes to manage the soybean cyst nematode, genes for resistance to Asian soybean rust, white mold, and brown stem rot. That’s your soybean checkoff. Delivering results.

About the Presenter

David WrightDavid Wright joined the Iowa Soybean Association in July of 2001 and is currently Director of Contract Research & Strategic Initiatives. His focus is the facilitation and coordination of checkoff-funded research initiatives in the areas of soybean breeding and production. Dr. Wright also guides university researchers across the United States in the prioritization of research that has the best combination of short- and long-term benefits for soybean producers. He was one of the first crop professionals to address the threat of Asian soybean rust in the United States. Dr. Wright's innovative response plan became the foundation for similar plans in more than 20 soybean-producing states. Dr. Wright also provides strategic direction to and manages research investments of the North Central Soybean Research Program, a collaboration of 12-state checkoff boards. This novel program pools funding from checkoff boards and invests into research that affects soybean producers throughout the United States. Prior to joining the Iowa Soybean Association, Dr. Wright served as a Regional Agronomy Services Manager for Cargill Hybrid Seeds, leading U.S. soybean research and development activities. He was also responsible for corn product development and agronomic sales support for the eastern United States. Dr. Wright holds a doctorate in agronomy from Kansas State University and MS and BS degrees from Iowa State University.
