Summary

​This presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the North-Central, and Southern U.S. evaluate how tillage is being used in their production system to combat herbicide-resistant weeds, an increasingly critical and widespread challenge. Specifically, the role of tillage in managing herbicide-resistant weeds will depend on the type and timing of the tillage performed; which aspect of weed management, the seeds or plants of weeds, is being targeted with the tillage operation; and how tillage may influence the implementation of other management practices such as herbicide use. By the end of this presentation, the practitioner should have a greater appreciation for the factors that influence the weed management benefits provided by tillage as well as some of the pitfalls of tillage for both short- and long-term management of herbicide-resistant weeds.

About the Presenter

Bryan YoungBryan Young is currently an Associate Professor in the department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Purdue University. Bryan earned his bachelor’s degree in crop and soil science at Michigan State University and doctorate in crop science (specialization in weed science) from the University of Illinois. Prior to Purdue Bryan spent 15 years in a weed science faculty position at Southern Illinois University with responsibilities in teaching, research, outreach, and administration. His research focuses on weed biology and ecology relative to developing effective management strategies in agronomic crops, herbicide application technologies for optimization and stewardship of herbicide use, and the physiological characterization of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes. His goal is to bridge the basic and applied aspects of weed management research to assist in delivering more effective weed management recommendations to crop producers and land managers.​
